Komatsu, a Japanese machinery maker, has partnered with Codelco, Chile's state-owned mining company and the world's largest copper producer. The hard rock / mining tunnel excavation method newly developed by Komatsu will be tested.
Komatsu publicized that the new technology can adapt to various conditions in hard rock tunnel excavation and has strong flexibility. The new equipment will also be powered by electricity. And it can realize a series of tunnel excavation processes by one machine, thus reducing the number of equipment required.
New equipment driven by electricity can also reduce the generation of greenhouse gas and particulate matter emissions, thus improving the underground environment. Compared with other methods, the new method requires less ventilation.
